Forefoot Deformity Correction

What is Forefoot Deformity?

Forefoot is a medical condition when the bones in the foot’s front (anterior) part are misaligned. The Forefoot comprises fifteen bones, including five metatarsal bones and fourteen phalanges. The problem arises when any of these bones move out of place.

What Causes Forefoot Deformities?

Forefoot abnormalities can have many different causes. Injuries or accidents could cause some. However, some deformities are present since birth and are considered congenital. In specific circumstances, such as Morton’s Neuroma and hammer toe, consistently wearing high-heeled or ill-fitting shoes might create the condition.

What are the Symptoms of Forefoot Deformity?

Some people experience tingling or soreness in a soccer ball of their foot, which can sometimes extend to the toes. It may be difficult to walk comfortably and may feel like a scorching or stabbing ache. Persistent complaints from some individuals include a “marble or stone” sensation beneath their feet.

Types of Forefoot Deformities

Hallux valgus- Varus

A bunion, or hallux valgus, is a complicated malformation of the first ray that can
lead to pain in the medial big toe and make wearing shoes difficult.

Crossover toe deformity

The metatarsophalangeal joint hyperextends, causing a deformity known as cross over toe when one toe crosses over another in a medial or lateral direction. The symptoms of the crossover toe include the second toe gradually moving toward the big toe and, in extreme cases, crossing over to rest atop the big toe. Although it primarily affects adults, this progressive disorder can set in at any age.

Hammer and mallet toe deformity

When the toe joint bends upward, it’s called a mallet toe. As a result, the toe may look curled rather than flat. The second toe, next to the big toe, is the most common site of mallet toe. The reason is that it’s usually the longest of the four little toes. However, the third and fourth toes are neither immune to mallet toes.

Bunionette correction

A bunionette (also known as a tailor’s bunion) is a painful bony protrusion, or hump, on the outside of the minor (pinky) toe. Over time, the bunionette may deteriorate when the little toe pushes inward and the fifth metatarsal (the bone attached to it) moves outward. Rubbing between the bump and tight shoes may also cause a callus to form over the area. All bunionettes can produce pain and pressure on the outside of the foot. However, generally, they do not create symptoms.

Metatarsalgia

An inflammatory condition that causes pain in the metatarsalgia is a foot condition. The space between your toes and the arch is known as the ball of your foot. The five bones that run across the ball of your foot and connect to each toe are called metatarsalgia.

Treatment of Forefoot

Surgical and nonsurgical methods are used to cure Forefoot based on the severity of the condition. A forefoot surgery involves removing the injured nerve
from the ball of the foot, a standard surgical procedure. For more queries, book a consultation call with our healthcare team!

Recovery Period

Though it could take four to six weeks to return to normal after some procedures, that’s usually the range. Following the first six weeks, ourĀ  physiotherapists may suggest a more gradual increase in activity levels. Usually, it takes from three to six months for the patient to regain entire movement, depending on their age and condition. By the sixth week, most people feel better, but it may take months to recover completely
